On Friday, February 16, 2018, at approximately 11:05 a.m., officers from the Manchester Township Police Department responded to the area of County Route 530 and Swift Lane in the Whiting section of the Township for the report a person struck by a vehicle.
Upon arrival, officers observed a grey, 2015, Ford Escape in the roadway and a 71-year-old female lying on the shoulder. The female, later identified as Gloria Kovack of Whiting, was conscious but bleeding from her head. The initial investigation revealed that the driver of the Ford, 83-year-old, Deming Fu, of Whiting, was traveling east on Route 530 approaching the intersection of Swift Lane when Kovack entered the roadway from the west side of the road. She then crossed in front of the Ford where she was struck. Kovack, who sustained facial abrasions as well as a leg and hip injury, was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River for treatment and evaluation. At this point, her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
The crash is being investigated by Sergeant Antonio Ellis of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit. Assisting at scene were EMTs from Quality Medical Transport.
